London says prisoners extradited to the former colony are at risk of ending up under Communist justice with a new national security law.
In yet another bid for the dispute between the West and China, the United Kingdom has announced that it will suspend the extradition treaty it maintains with its former colony Hong Kong.
With that, London follows the USA, Australia and Canada, which also took the same measure as a way to prevent people extradited to semi-autonomous territory from ending up in the judicial system of the communist dictatorship.
The fear exists because of Article 55 of Hong Kong’s new national security law, which came into force at the end of last month. The text gave Beijing broad powers to search, arrest and prosecute people in Hong Kong on charges of secession, terrorism or collusion with foreign powers.
