EU-China summit on 22 June by videoconference

The European Union and China will celebrate on June 22, by videoconference, a summit that was scheduled for March but has been postponed due to the covid-19 pandemic, the spokesman for the president of the European Council announced today.

“On Monday 22 June, the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, will celebrate the 22nd EU-China summit together with the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, via videoconference”, announced the spokesman voice on the social network Twitter.

At the beginning of the month, the European Commission had already indicated that it was working with Beijing with a view to holding a bilateral summit at the level of the leaders of the institutions, and then European sources advanced that it should be held in June, but after the European Council scheduled for next Friday, 19 June.

This high-level meeting between the leaders of Brussels and Beijing is distinct from the summit with China that the German presidency of the EU Council, in the second half of the year, had planned to celebrate in September in Leipzig, and that Chancellor Angela Merkel decided to earlier this month postpone due to the covid-19 pandemic, to a date yet to be defined.
