Two-day premature baby died infected in South Africa

A premature baby of just two days died of covid-19 in South Africa, the country’s first neonatal death, according to the latest official data.

According to President Cyril Ramaphosa’s government on Wednesday night, the mother and baby tested positive for the new coronavirus. “Unfortunately, we recorded the first neonatal death related to covid-19. The baby was two days old and was born premature. He had lung difficulties that required ventilatory (pulmonary) support immediately after birth,” said the South African Ministry of Health, in a statement released late Wednesday, which announced 26 new deaths from the disease.
