UEFA wants clubs in Europe for sporting merit even if leagues are not finished

Nuno Fernandes

You can define the ideal scenario for the finished championships, but if this is not possible, leave the criteria to choose the clubs that will test. But there are rules … The UEFA Executive Committee met this Thursday with representatives of the 55 associations that have gone through a video conference and have repeated it again or that it will say for some time, that is, that all tests must be done for the champions that will be concluded until the 3rd of August, so as not to delay or normal development of the next season.

But he left some indications in case some championships cannot be finished. Stressing that “the health of players, spectators and everyone involved in football, as well as the general public, must remain a major problem at this point”, a reference from UEFA on the ideal scenario, in the event of a pandemic or use situation, “is to end as currently suspended national competitions, allowing clubs to qualify for UEFA club competitions based on sporting merit, as in the original format”. If this is not possible, the European football governing body suggests that “suspended competitions will be reactivated in a different format, in order to make it easier for clubs to qualify based on sporting merit”.
