A US service member was killed and another was mildly injured during a controlled disposal of unexploded ordnance from a downed Iranian drone in northern Iraq.
US Central Command confirmed the casualty occurred on July 18, raising the total number of American military deaths to 17 since the onset of the US and Israeli war with Iran on February 28. The death comes alongside the discovery of human remains following a separate strike on Friday that killed two US service members and left another missing in Jordan.
The loss coincides with an eighth consecutive night of American strikes against targets inside Iran. Recent operations hit locations near Sirik, Shadegan, and Abadan, while Iranian atomic officials condemned a strike near a nuclear power facility under construction in Darkhovin. The International Atomic Energy Agency stated it is investigating the reports regarding the early-stage construction site.

Iran responded with retaliatory drone and missile strikes directed at US installations and allied infrastructure across the region. Attacks targeted US military positions at the Al-Adiri camp and Ali Al Salem airbase in Kuwait.
Kuwaiti officials reported that a second consecutive strike on a vital desalination plant ignited a fire, calling the action a direct hit on critical civilian infrastructure. Air defense systems in neighboring Bahrain and Jordan were also active, with Jordan intercepting multiple incoming missiles and summoning Iran’s diplomatic envoy in protest.
The intensification of hostilites follows the breakdown of an interim ceasefire agreed upon last month. Conflict along key maritime transit corridors, particularly the Strait of Hormuz, continues to drive broader regional instability and spark global energy market volatility.
