The president of Spain’s main opposition Popular Party (PP), Alberto Núñez Feijóo, warned today that the coming weeks will be “highly demanding” due to severe weather conditions, following the devastating wildfire in Almería that has claimed 12 lives. Speaking at the opening of the party’s 16th National Congress in Valladolid, Feijóo stressed that the country is entering a “very complicated” period mirroring the harsh wildfire season of 2025.

Feijóo urged citizens to remain exceptionally cautious and keep their guard up through both summer and autumn. While the party convention was originally organized to outline policy platforms for young voters and present a broader vision of governance, the event was heavily overshadowed by the disaster unfolding in Andalusia.

The PP leader expressed deep sorrow over the loss of life, noting that the fire follows recent regional floods and a major transport accident in Adamuz, which have severely tested the resilience of both citizens and local institutions.

During his address, the opposition leader called on all levels of public administration to deploy every available resource, demand maximum logistical coordination, and proactively secure extraordinary emergency capabilities.

Feijóo framed efficient disaster management as the kind of unifying, service-oriented politics citizens expect during crises, assuring that PP-led regional and municipal governments would continue working tirelessly to protect public safety and the environment.

The latest reports reveal that the wildfire, which originated in Los Gallardos, has scorched 6,600 hectares of land and flames have consistently pushed past containment boundaries due to highly active fronts.

However, Andalusia’s regional emergency chief, Antonio Sanz, confirmed from the command post that a drop in wind speeds to two kilometers per hour alongside 50% humidity levels has finally given crews a critical window of opportunity to pivot toward a direct attack on the blazes.

While the official death toll remains at 12, authorities are searching for approximately 20 missing individuals, while 500 ground personnel and 10 aircraft continue to manage the relocation of 1,448 evacuated residents.
