Spain wildfire leaves 11 dead as high winds threaten spread (with video)

A catastrophic wildfire ripping through Spain’s southern coast has claimed the lives of at least 11 people, marking the country’s deadliest blazes in over two decades. Regional authorities expressed deep concern on Friday as aggressive wind gusts threatened to push the fast-moving flames into new communities.

The forest fire broke out near the town of Los Gallardos on the Costa de Almería. Around 150 emergency personnel have been deployed to combat the inferno, which officials are calling the most severe to hit the Andalusia region in recent history.

Strong western winds have accelerated the fire’s path, complicating containment efforts and forcing emergency crews to rapidly clear out several residential zones.

“The situation is terrifying because there is a lot of wind and the fire has spread very quickly,” said Los Gallardos Mayor Francisco Reyes.

Evacuation orders were quickly extended from the small villages of Almocáizar and Terminar de Vedas toward a nearby campground, where local authorities scrambled to safely displace between 400 and 500 people ahead of the advancing flames.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez issued a statement on social media offering condolences to those affected by the tragedy. The current loss of life makes this Spain’s highest wildfire death toll since 2005, when an unmonitored barbecue sparked a massive blaze in the Guadalajara province, killing 11 firefighters.

The disaster comes amid an exceptionally intense summer heatwave across Europe, a continent warming at more than double the global average speed according to the European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service.

  • Extreme temperatures: Just last month, Spain’s meteorological agency, AEMET, recorded national temperatures averaging nearly 13 degrees Fahrenheit above typical summer levels.

  • Regional impact: Neighboring France and the United Kingdom also shattered records last month, with multiple French cities enduring heat exceeding 104 degrees Fahrenheit (40°C).

The combination of prolonged drought and intense heat has turned landscapes across Southern Europe into tinderboxes. Emergency services in Portugal recently battled fires so massive that their smoke plumes were visible from orbit, while French firefighters continue to fight containment battles across thousands of hectares of dry brush near the Spanish border.

With AEMET issuing fresh high-temperature warnings for Andalusia, emergency officials fear that until the blistering weather breaks and the winds die down, the threat to the Spanish coast remains critical.
