Trump blasts Europe over migration and threatens 100% tariffs ahead of pivotal NATO summit. What’s at stake?

U.S. President Donald Trump has sharply escalated his rhetoric against European allies, warning that their migration policies are turning the continent into a "Third World country" and threatening a 100% tariff on European imports over proposed digital multinational taxes. Speaking ahead of a critical NATO summit in Turkey, Trump further degraded the security bloc by calling it a "paper tiger" and reiterating his threat of a U.S. withdrawal, citing a distinct lack of allied "loyalty" during the recent military conflict with Iran

The President of the United States, Donald Trump, criticized European leaders today for allowing the entry into their countries of those he referred to as “Third World criminals,” in reference to migrants.

“Europe is learning that when you let in Third World criminals, you convert yourself into a Third World country,” Trump wrote in a message published on his own social network, Truth. In the opinion of the United States President, it all happens very quickly. It is in the blink of an eye! I was elected just in time, he added in the message, referring to his policies of closing borders to immigration.

Since Donald Trump’s return to power in 2025, he has intensified his already harsh anti-immigration approach to save the country from a migratory invasion, and has openly manifested his disagreements with European allies.

In the midst of the celebrations for the 250th anniversary of U.S. Independence, this July 4th, the president insisted the day before, near the emblematic Mount Rushmore—the famous national monument known for the gigantic sculptures of the faces of four American presidents—on his warnings about newcomers who do not share the values of the U.S.

Trump and members of his administration have criticized on several occasions the migratory and environmental policies of European nations and, more recently, classified them as terrible partners for not having supported him in the war with Iran.

In recent months, his most forceful words have been directed against Spain, Italy, Germany, France, and the United Kingdom, whom he reproaches for having denied logistical support to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, or access to their military bases at key moments of the conflict with Tehran. Furthermore, he questioned the usefulness of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and the burden-sharing among its members.

The Republican leader, who will participate next week in the Alliance summit in Turkey, stated that he will attend the event only out of respect for Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Trump defined the bloc as a paper tiger and hinted that he is seriously considering the possibility of withdrawing the U.S. from NATO, even though he would need congressional approval to do so.

In addition, he threatened to impose a 100% tariff on European imports should the European Parliament’s proposal to create a common tax for digital multinationals, such as Google, Apple, Meta, or Amazon, be approved.
