Congressional report accuses Trump of hijacking US semiquincentennial for personal and political gains

U.S. President Donald Trump has announced that Iran accepted nearly all of Washington's demands regarding its nuclear disarmament following a preliminary framework reached on June 18. However, the diplomatic breakthrough faces an immediate operational impasse as Tehran insists that any final agreement must encompass a halt to Israeli military operations in southern Lebanon

A scathing congressional report released today asserts that President Donald Trump has misappropriated the United States’ 250th independence anniversary celebrations to advance his own political ideology and personal commercial projects.

The report, titled “From Vanity to Madness: How the White House Deceived the American People by Depriving Them of Their 250th Anniversary,” alleges a widespread network of corruption that systematically undermined the official, non-partisan framework established by lawmakers to honor the historic milestone.

In 2016, Congress created the bipartisan America250 Commission along with a matching non-profit foundation to ensure the country’s semiquincentennial celebrations remained impartial and accessible to all citizens. However, according to the congressional findings, when the leadership of America250 resisted intense pressure from the White House to politicize the events, the Trump administration established a rival organization named “Freedom250” to bypass the official body.

The report details how the administration actively intercepted high-profile corporate donors intending to finance the official America250 commission. These benefactors were allegedly redirected toward the White House-backed Freedom250 organization, which directly provided them with its own routing and banking information. To protect corporate whistleblowers, the names of the diverted donors have been withheld from the public text.

In addition to private funds, congressional Democrats accuse Trump allies of aggressively lobbying to divert $75 million in federal funding originally appropriated by Congress exclusively for America250.

Danielle Alvarez, a spokesperson for Freedom250, forcefully pushed back against the publication. She characterized the document as a “partisan smear campaign orchestrated by politicians who prefer to sow division rather than celebrate America’s 250th anniversary along with the rest of the country.”

The political friction spilled directly into the public sphere following the June 24 launch of the “Great American State Fair” on the National Mall. Conceived by the White House as a massive exhibition showcasing all U.S. states and territories, the event suffered immediate structural blows when multiple state governments pulled out just days before opening night.

At least seven states led by Democratic governors officially declined to participate, citing growing anxieties over the hyper-partisan nature of the White House event. According to reports from The Hill, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Washington, Illinois, Oregon, and Connecticut officially blamed sudden budgetary constraints for their absence, while Maine’s state tourism board declined the invitation due to scheduling conflicts.

The boycott extended deep into the entertainment lineup. Multiple prominent acts abruptly canceled their scheduled performances on the National Mall after learning of the event’s direct operational ties to the White House. High-profile departures from the roster included Poison frontman Bret Michaels, country-rock veterans The Marshall Tucker Band, Alabama, The Oak Ridge Boys, and country singer Mark Wills.

The report further lambastes the President for blurring the lines between state celebrations and personal milestones. On June 14, Trump celebrated his 80th birthday inside the White House by hosting a live Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) martial arts event, which marketing materials explicitly linked to the nation’s 250th anniversary festivities.

The scrutiny is expected to peak tomorrow on the Fourth of July. Breaking from the decades-long tradition of maintaining a strictly apolitical holiday in the nation’s capital, Trump has promised to deliver a massive political demonstration. “We will have the most spectacular rally ever by TRUMP, a TRIBUTE TO AMERICA,” the President announced in all-caps on his Truth Social platform.

The administration’s focus on scale has also impacted the capital’s traditional pyrotechnics display. According to documents obtained by USA Today, Freedom250’s singular directive to Pyrotecnico—the contractor hired for the event—was to construct a display massive enough to break the 2016 world record held by the Philippines for the largest fireworks show in human history.

Meanwhile, the original, bipartisan America250 organization confirmed it will continue to move forward with its own independent, non-partisan celebrations, scheduling major civic events and street festivals across New York, Philadelphia, and California.
