The German national football coach, Julian Nagelsmann, was sacked from his position today, and the German Football Association (DFB) has already announced that it will begin negotiations with Jürgen Klopp, the former manager of Liverpool.
Shareholders and the DFB board decided today unanimously and at the request of the DFB president to immediately terminate the contract with national team coach Julian Nagelsmann, the German Federation stated on its official page.
The governing body added that the coach himself had already requested on Thursday to be relieved of his duties following the disappointing result at the 2026 World Cup currently taking place in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
Nagelsmann, who had taken over as Germany’s coach in September 2023, saw his team eliminated on Monday in the round of 32 of the 2026 World Cup by Paraguay in a penalty shootout. Before that, the four-time world champions had won Group E with victories over debutants Curaçao (7-1) and Ivory Coast (2-1), alongside a defeat against Ecuador (1-2).

The decision was not easy for me, my priority was always the success of the team, but after such a bitter disappointment, they deserve the opportunity for a new beginning, the 38-year-old coach was quoted as saying by the DFB. Under the manager’s guidance, the Mannschaft was eliminated in the quarter-finals of Euro 2024 hosted by Germany and lost in the semi-finals of the 2025 Nations League, also at home, against Portugal, who would go on to win the trophy.
In the same note, the DFB stated its intention to begin talks with the highly regarded German manager Jürgen Klopp, revealing that he had already signaled a broad willingness to take over the position. Klopp spent nine seasons at Liverpool, managing to win the Champions League and the league title with the Reds, and chose to leave the English club at the end of the 2023/24 season.
