Paraguay qualified on Monday for the round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup by defeating Germany 4-3 in a penalty shootout, following a 1-1 draw after 120 minutes of play in the third match of the round of 32.
Playing in Foxborough, United States, Julio Enciso put the South Americans ahead in the 42nd minute. However, Kai Havertz netted an equalizer in the 54th minute for the Germans, who suffer another early tournament exit after famously failing to advance past the group stage in both 2018 and 2022.

In the round of 16, scheduled for Saturday, Paraguay—whose best-ever World Cup run came with a quarterfinal appearance in 2010—will face the winner of the upcoming clash between France and Sweden.
