In a historic shift for the gaming industry, Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced plans to completely phase out the production of physical game discs for all new PlayStation releases starting in January 2028.

Following this deadline, all newly launched titles will be distributed exclusively as digital versions through the PlayStation Store and participating digital storefronts. Sony clarified that legacy games released prior to January 2028 will remain unaffected and will continue to be available in their existing physical formats.

The corporate decision signals the impending end of the traditional packaged retail model that has defined console generations for decades. In a press statement addressing the strategy, Sony framed the transition as a direct response to undeniable consumer behavior.

The company noted that this is a natural direction for Sony Interactive Entertainment to adapt to consumer trends as the general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs, adding that the move aligns the brand directly with how the modern gaming community prefers to access its content.

The official announcement solidifies an industry-wide trend that has been rapidly gaining momentum. It follows a recent wave of consumer pushback directed at Rockstar Games after the publisher revealed that the highly anticipated physical edition of Grand Theft Auto VI would not contain a physical Blu-ray disc, but rather a simple digital download voucher inside a standard plastic box.

Sony’s formal policy codifies what many publishers have already been implementing on an individual basis.

While a purely digital ecosystem streamlines distribution for platform holders and eliminates manufacturing, shipping, and storage overheads, the total elimination of physical discs raises serious concerns regarding long-term consumer rights and media preservation.

Digital-only marketplaces strip buyers of any standard resale value, rendering the used game market completely obsolete for future software.

Furthermore, a digital lock-in removes the ability for friends to easily loan or share physical copies of games, while leaving players entirely dependent on active console servers, persistent internet connections, and corporate account status to retain access to libraries they have purchased.
