The Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture, O Lam, extended condolences to the family of Leong Sao Chan, former leader of the Kiang Wu Hospital Charitable Association and one of the most prominent figures in Macau’s medical field, expressing deep sadness over her passing.
In a message released by the Government of the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR), O Lam highlighted Leong Sao Chan’s career, emphasizing her decades-long dedication to the development of healthcare in Macau.
Leong Sao Chan began her journey in 1939, when she entered the Kiang Wu Nursing School, dedicating her entire life to public service, according to the official statement. During the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, she participated alongside other Kiang Wu Hospital staff in providing medical care to both civilians and wounded soldiers.
Throughout her career, she served as secretary-general of the Kiang Wu Hospital Charitable Association and as director of the institution, leading initiatives aimed at modernizing the hospital. Her key contributions included the establishment of new clinical specialties, the introduction of modern medical equipment, the revision of internal regulations, and the training of successive generations of local healthcare professionals.

The Government also highlighted her role in transforming Kiang Wu Hospital into a modern medical institution dedicated not only to healthcare services, but also to teaching and scientific research.
The message also noted Leong Sao Chan’s involvement in public life in Macau. She was a member of the 8th and 9th National Committees of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference and served on the Preparatory Committee of the Macao Special Administrative Region, participating in work related to Macau’s handover and contributing to the process.
In the condolence message, O Lam stated that Leong Sao Chan’s legacy will live on through her dedication to healthcare development, professional training, and public service, adding that her life path will continue to serve as an inspiration to future generations.
