Angolan directors Mawete Paciência, Malef, and Kayaya Júnior announced their participation in the 2026 Cannes Film Festival today, traveling to France using their own private resources to put Angolan cinema on the map for international distributors.
Kayaya Júnior, who arrived in France on Sunday, confirmed that he has already held meetings with two distribution companies ahead of the festival’s official start this Tuesday. He emphasized that the primary goal is to find a place for Angolan productions within global circuits, noting a visible openness and interest from international agents in discovering fresh content.
Speaking to Lusa from France, Kayaya Júnior expressed optimism about the reception of their work, stating that the current mission is to pave the way for a more formal Angolan presence in future editions, perhaps even securing a dedicated exhibition corner to sell audiovisual content. He pointed out that Angola now maintains an annual production of nearly six films, a volume that he believes justifies a consistent presence at major global events like Cannes.
However, the filmmaker lamented the ongoing lack of institutional support from the Angolan government. He highlighted that the current delegation is funded entirely by the filmmakers themselves and private supporters, rather than through national cultural or tourism bodies.

Kayaya Júnior argued that it is essential for national institutions to recognize the value of cinema and invest in a more significant presence at these markets to wave the Angolan flag alongside other nations.
Despite the financial hurdles, he remains confident in the quality of Angolan films, stressing that the talent exists and simply requires the opportunity to be showcased to the world. The 2026 Cannes Film Festival, considered the most influential cinematic event globally, takes place from May 12 to May 23.
