President Donald Trump has ordered the floor of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool to be painted blue, marking one of the most visible architectural interventions since his return to power in 2025. On Thursday, Trump issued a directive from the Oval Office mandating that the historic landmark be resurfaced in a shade he described as “American flag blue.”
“The result will be a beautiful reflecting pool, truly beautiful. Exactly how it should be,” the President declared while showcasing construction progress photos to reporters. Trump expressed dissatisfaction with the current state of the site—famous for hosting Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech during the 1963 March on Washington—claiming a friend from Germany had described the water’s appearance as “disgusting” and “filthy.”
The renovation is estimated to cost approximately $1.5 million and is slated for completion before July 4, 2026, the date of the United States’ Sestercentennial (250th anniversary). Contractors have already begun prep work on the stone and the application of the new lining. The pool, originally constructed in the 1920s, last underwent a major $34 million rehabilitation in 2012.

This project is part of a broader, often controversial, reimagining of the nation’s capital under the Trump administration.
Other initiatives include the construction of a massive grand ballroom at the White House—following the demolition of the East Wing—and a two-year renovation of the Kennedy Center. Most notably, the President is pushing for the addition of a 76-meter-high triumphal arch at the National Mall. If completed, the structure would be nearly 30 meters taller than the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, making it the largest arch of its kind in the world.
