The Russian President proposed a ceasefire in Ukraine for May 9, the day Russia celebrates the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany in 1945, the Kremlin announced today.
The Russian presidency indicated that U.S. President Donald Trump, with whom Vladimir Putin held a telephone conversation today, supported the initiative.
In the conversation with Trump, Putin stated he was ready “to decree a ceasefire during the period of the Victory Day celebrations,” diplomatic advisor Yuri Ushakov told the media.
“Trump actively supported this initiative, noting that this holiday marks our shared victory,” Ushakov added.

Since 2023, Ukraine has celebrated the victory in World War II on May 8, as Western countries do. Trump said he had a “very good” conversation with his Russian counterpart, indicating that during it, he advocated for a ceasefire in Ukraine.
According to the U.S. head of state, the conversation focused primarily on the war between Russia and Ukraine, whereas the Kremlin stated that the two leaders “gave special attention to the situation in Iran and the Persian Gulf.”
According to Putin’s diplomatic advisor, the Russian President warned his U.S. counterpart about the “harmful consequences” of a resumption of military actions by the United States and Israel against Iran.
In the telephone conversation between the two leaders, Putin “underlined the inevitable and extremely harmful consequences, not only for Iran and its neighbors but also for the entire international community, if the United States and Israel resort again to military actions” against Iran, Ushakov told the media.
