Jimmy Kimmel returned to the airwaves on Monday to vehemently defend his recent comedy set against accusations that he incited violence, following a high-profile demand from President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump for his immediate termination.

The late-night host addressed the controversy surrounding a skit aired on his show just days before an armed individual charged a security checkpoint at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner.

During that skit, Kimmel remarked that the First Lady had a “glow like an expectant widow,” a comment he clarified on Monday was intended as a sarcastic jab at the couple’s age difference and the First Lady’s public demeanor, rather than any literal threat to the President’s life.

Kimmel rejected the assertion that his words constituted a “call to assassination,” describing such interpretations as a distortion of his intent.

He emphasized his long history of speaking out against gun violence and expressed sympathy for the trauma caused by the shooting incident, which resulted in the suspect, 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen, being charged with the attempted assassination of the President.

As noted by NBC News, the political fallout has been swift, with the President utilizing his social media platform, Truth Social, to describe Kimmel’s comments as “despicable” and “far beyond the pale,” while the First Lady took to X to accuse the comedian of spreading hate and called for ABC to take a public stand against him.

The President has frequently expressed disdain for the traditional roast-style humor employed by celebrity comedians at his expense, a tension that has escalated repeatedly throughout his term. This latest conflict follows a previous incident in September, when ABC briefly suspended Kimmel’s program after he made comments regarding the political motivations of an individual accused of assassinating conservative activist Charlie Kirk in Utah.

Kimmel, who later returned to the airwaves and maintained he never intended to make light of violence, is once again facing institutional pressure to alter his tone.

Despite the intense public pressure from the White House, ABC and its parent company, Disney, have remained silent and have not responded to requests for comment regarding the future of the show.

Kimmel concluded his Monday monologue by doubling down on his position, asserting that his comedy is protected speech. He framed the situation as a fundamental debate over the rights of Americans, declaring that as a citizen, he retains the right to lampoon the political leadership, regardless of the criticism leveled against him by those in power.
