Cheng Li-wun, leader of Taiwan’s main opposition party the Kuomintang (KMT), said she hopes that Chinese President Xi Jinping could one day be received in Taiwan, calling for greater mutual political trust between both sides of the Taiwan Strait.
Her remarks came during a meeting held in Beijing at the Great Hall of the People, where she met Chinese officials in what is described as the first high-level contact between the Chinese Communist Party and the KMT in nearly a decade.
Cheng emphasized that dialogue should be reciprocal, saying she would “sincerely hope” to welcome Xi in Taiwan in the future. She also urged Beijing to support Taiwan’s participation in international organizations such as the World Health Organization and the International Civil Aviation Organization.
China, which considers Taiwan a breakaway province, has consistently opposed its participation in global institutions and increased military and diplomatic pressure on the self-governed island in recent years.

Cheng also highlighted economic cooperation across the Taiwan Strait, suggesting deeper integration through regional trade frameworks such as the RCEP and CPTPP.
The meeting comes at a sensitive moment, amid heightened geopolitical tensions and ahead of anticipated diplomatic engagements involving China and the United States.
