José Pereira Coutinho, in a Facebook post, wrote that he spoke to Hong Kong broadcaster TVB on Thursday (16th), addressing Tai Kin Ip’s resignation and its implications for Macau’s current economic and administrative challenges.
The lawmaker noted the move will help tackle “many structural issues, such as youth unemployment, the decline in the number of non-resident workers, the attraction and creation of high-quality businesses, the proper use of public funds, etc.”
He added that “this change also entails improving the quality of service provided by the leaders and managers of subordinate units.”
Coutinho stressed the importance of transparency and fairness in future government appointments. “The selection of senior public officials should be based on merit, not on personal relationships or other improper reasons, because the general public ultimately pays the price,” he wrote.
