China willing to expand cooperation with Portugal using Macau as platform

China’s Vice President Han Zheng stated today that Beijing is willing to deepen cooperation with Portugal, strengthening mutual trust and expanding collaboration in areas such as clean energy, digital economy, artificial intelligence, and healthcare, with Macau serving as a strategic platform.

According to the People’s Daily, the remarks were made during a meeting in Beijing with the President of the Portuguese Assembly of the Republic, José Pedro Aguiar-Branco, who began an official visit to China today.

Han Zheng emphasized that Sino-Portuguese cooperation should follow the strategic guidance set by the two countries’ heads of state, aiming to enhance high-level political trust and strategic communication. He also recalled that Chinese President Xi Jinping recently sent a congratulatory message to Portugal’s new President, highlighting the importance of strengthening bilateral ties.

The Chinese vice president added that relations between China and Portugal can contribute to a positive partnership between China and Europe, promoting international cooperation, as well as global peace and development through a stable, open, and mutually beneficial relationship.

For his part, José Pedro Aguiar-Branco stated that Portugal and China maintain “a high level of mutual trust.” He highlighted the success of the “one country, two systems” principle in Macau and expressed Portugal’s willingness to deepen bilateral practical cooperation and coordination in multilateral forums.

The Portuguese official’s visit is part of a broader effort to strengthen political, economic, and institutional relations between Portugal and China.
