American golfer Tiger Woods was arrested today on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs following a car accident, according to the Martin County Sheriff’s Office.
The accident occurred around 2:00 PM local time (6:00 PM Lisbon) in Jupiter Island, Florida, near Woods’ residence. The sheriff reported that Woods was uninjured, although his vehicle had overturned.
“[Tiger] Woods showed signs of impairment. We conducted several field tests before his arrest and transport to the Martin County jail,” said Sheriff John Budensiek.
The sheriff indicated that officers believed Woods was not under the influence of alcohol, but possibly under the effect of medications or drugs. At the station, Woods cooperated with a breathalyzer test but refused a urine test.

The 50-year-old golfer posted bail and was freed after approximately eight hours in jail, facing charges of driving under the influence, property damage, and refusal to take a urine test to detect other potential substances.
This is at least the third traffic incident involving Woods, the most serious being in February 2021, when his car rolled down a slope in Los Angeles, causing severe leg injuries.
Previously, in 2017, Woods was arrested for DUI after being found asleep at the wheel in a parking lot, with damage to the driver’s side of his vehicle.
Since the 2021 accident, Woods has played only 11 tournaments, never regaining the peak form that made him one of golf’s greatest players, with 15 major championships (last won at the 2019 Masters) and 82 PGA Tour wins, tying the record with Sam Snead. He has not competed since the 2024 British Open and is recovering from his seventh back surgery.
