Train derails in Switzerland as deadly avalanches hit the Alps

A train derailed near Goppenstein, Switzerland, on Monday after being struck by a snow slide, injuring five people, Swiss police said. The incident occurred as large parts of the western Alps remained under category 5 avalanche risk, the highest level, following heavy snowfall and strong winds.

The derailment comes amid a series of fatal avalanches across the Alps in recent days. Over the weekend, multiple skiers were killed in France and Italy, including two British nationals who died in an avalanche in Val d’Isère, and two more skiers killed on the Italian side of Mont Blanc.

Authorities have closed roads and placed villages under evacuation orders in several Alpine regions. Rescue services warned that exceptionally unstable snow conditions, caused by fresh snowfall over weak snow layers, have created extreme danger, with even small triggers capable of causing large avalanches.

Emergency services continue to urge skiers and mountaineers to avoid off-piste terrain as conditions remain highly volatile across France, Switzerland and Italy.
