The Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) staged a high-profile presence at FITUR in Madrid (21–25 January), operating a dedicated Macao Pavilion and partnering with China’s Pavilion to deliver destination presentations and live experiences that showcased Macao’s cultural, gastronomic and lifestyle assets under the “tourism +” concept.
The campaign signals MGTO’s 2026 strategic intention to deepen engagement with Europe and other long-haul markets.
Deputy Director Cheng Wai Tong led a delegation of Macao travel-trade representatives and an integrated-resort partner to promote multi-destination and in-depth tour opportunities.
The Pavilion hosted hands-on workshops—Portuguese folk dance, Tai Chi, Wing Chun and Portuguese tile painting—and offered Macanese tastings, giving European trade buyers and the public first-hand exposure to Macao’s East-West cultural fusion.
These live activations are designed to help European operators design longer, multi-stop itineraries that include Macao.
A destination presentation at the Pavilion brought together industry leaders and association heads to discuss travel stimulation programmes and product collaboration.
Airlines, tour operators and local service providers joined MGTO in showcasing routes and packaged experiences, while MGTO also coordinated a Macanese tasting session with the China Pavilion to further engage European buyers.
MGTO is extending the FITUR outreach with multilingual online training and market research to refine promotional strategy.
A Portuguese-language training phase is planned for 2026, with broader modules in German and English targeted at Germany, Finland and the Netherlands. MGTO is also surveying European travel preferences to inform future product development and media outreach.
Ahead of and during FITUR, MGTO launched promotional activity with Ávoris (a leading Spain-and-Portugal travel group) to develop multi-destination packages and pre-FITUR promotions running through April, aiming to convert trade interest into longer stays and higher visitor spend for Macao.
MGTO’s FITUR programme forms part of a larger European calendar that includes events in Lisbon (BTL), ITB Berlin and a London promotional event in March.
Macao’s traction in Europe is measurable: arrivals from Spain, Portugal and other European markets recorded double-digit growth in 2025, and APAVT has named Macao a “Preferred Destination 2026,” reinforcing MGTO’s momentum as it pursues deeper long-haul diversification.
