The UN Security Council today approved the lifting of sanctions against Syrian transitional President Ahmed al-Sharaa, a former leader of a jihadist group in the rebel coalition that overthrew the Damascus regime in 2024.

All members of the Council, except for China, which abstained, voted in favor of the resolution that suspends sanctions against al-Sharaa and Syrian Interior Minister Anas Khattab. Just days before al-Sharaa’s planned visit to Washington, the resolution, proposed and signed by the United States, was hailed by the U.S. delegation as a “strong political signal.”

The U.S. ambassador to the UN commented that the adopted resolution “recognizes a new era in Syria,” praising the “hard work” of al-Sharaa’s administration. Michael Waltz also cited U.S. President Donald Trump, stating that today’s approval in New York will facilitate “the prospect of peace for Syria.”

The sanctions targeted individuals and groups linked to the terrorist organizations ISIS and Al-Qaeda, subjecting them to travel bans, asset freezes, and arms embargoes.
