The São Paulo Military Police found at least 12 skulls and other human bones inside an apartment in Jardim Paulista, a middle- and upper-class neighborhood in the city’s west side, on Saturday morning (18).
According to the police, the property belonged to a 79-year-old man who died earlier in the week. Relatives who went to the apartment to collect his belongings discovered bones and gravestones and called the police. Inside the residence, officers found additional remains scattered across different rooms.
Cinco crânios humanos com sinais de deterioração estão dentro de um saco plástico branco com bordas verdes e azuis. A imagem mostra detalhes das aberturas e superfícies dos crânios, alguns com buracos visíveis.
A sealed box was also left intact for forensic examination. Authorities suspect that the human remains were illegally taken from cemeteries in the city, a hypothesis now being investigated by the Civil Police.
Neighbors expressed surprise at the movement of patrol cars on Guarará Street, a location known for its tranquility and mix of bars and restaurants. One resident said the elderly man was a well-known figure in the area and had never shown any suspicious behavior.
The case was recorded as discovery of a corpse and theft or concealment of a corpse.
Police have not yet said whether the man lived alone or how long he had kept the remains in the apartment.
