The incident, which occurred around 4 a.m. local time, resulted in the deaths of two ground staff members who were in a vehicle on the runway at the time. Police reported that one staff member was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other succumbed to injuries after being transported to a nearby hospital.
Initial investigations suggest that the aircraft may have struck the ground vehicle as it veered off the runway. Fortunately, the four crew members aboard the cargo plane were rescued and taken to the hospital for evaluation, and they are reported to be in stable condition. The plane had departed from Dubai earlier in the day.
In response to the incident, the Airport Authority Hong Kong activated the Airport Emergency Centre and initiated immediate rescue operations. As a precaution, the airport’s north runway has been closed to facilitate the ongoing investigation and recovery efforts.
Authorities are working to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the accident, and more information is expected to emerge as the investigation continues.
