Portuguese language writers meet in Cape Verde

More than 20 Portuguese-speaking writers are taking part in a meeting in Cabo Verde's capital, Praia, starting on Thursday, which will cover topics such as artificial intelligence and the 50th anniversary of the independence of the former Portuguese colonies, as well as honouring Camões.

The 13th Meeting of Portuguese Language Writers, which runs until Saturday, is organised by the Union of Portuguese Language Capital Cities (UCCLA) and the Praia City Council, on the island of Santiago.

The meeting will be attended by names such as Israel Campos (Angola), Ozias Filho (Brazil), Adolfo Lopes, Arménio Vieira (remotely, with text), Dina Salústio, Germano Almeida, Hélio Varela (by video), Manuel Pereira Silva, Nardi Sousa, Paulo Veríssimo, Princezito and Sérgio Raimundo (Cabo Verde), Teresa Moure Pereiro (Galicia), Emílio Tavares Lima (Guinea-Bissau), Joaquim Ng Pereira (Macau/China), Sérgio Raimundo (Mozambique), Hélia Correia, Isabel Castro Henriques (video), Manuel Alegre (text), Ricardo Araújo Pereira (Portugal) and Alice Goretti Pina (Sao Tome and Principe).

Also taking part will be the writer Cláudio Silva, winner of this year’s UCCLA – Lisbon City Council Literary Revelation Award: New Talents, New Works in Portuguese, and João de Sousa, from the publishing house A Bela e o Monstro, responsible for the annotated edition of ‘Os Lusíadas’.

The event kicks off today with a meeting between writers and students, which will take place in a secondary school and at the University of Cabo Verde, before the official opening in the presence of the President of Cabo Verde, José Maria Neves, which will include a tribute to the 50th anniversary of the independence of the former Portuguese colonies and the 5th centenary of Camões.

This will be followed by the inauguration of the bust of Camões in Cabo Verde’s National Library, donated by UCCLA. Camões will continue to be the subject of a panel discussion with various writers, including Camões prize-winners Germano Almeida and Hélia Correia.

Literature and humour, with Ricardo Araújo Pereira, will close the first day of the meeting. On Friday, the UCCLA-CML Literary Revelation Prize will be presented, with prize-winner Cláudio da Silva.

The 50th anniversary of the independence of the former Portuguese colonies will dominate the afternoon of the second day of the meeting, which on Saturday will address the relationship between literature and artificial intelligence.
