The partnership creates the Joint Laboratory in Artificial Intelligence for Healthy Longevity, with research hubs in Coimbra and Hengqin, UC said in a statement sent to Lusa.

According to the Portuguese institution, the lab’s core mission is to develop innovative solutions to help delay ageing and improve quality of life by combining biomedical research with the capabilities of artificial intelligence.

The initiative deepens existing collaboration between UC and MPU, which already brings together multiple research teams through scientific projects, including the Joint Laboratory in Advanced Technologies for Smart Cities, created in 2022.

At the ceremony marking the launch of the new laboratory, the universities also signed protocols to promote cooperation in teaching and in the mobility of students, academic staff and researchers from both institutions.

UC’s rector, Amílcar Falcão, said the lab represents the internationalisation of the University of Coimbra’s expertise in ageing, projecting globally the work developed through the Multidisciplinary Institute of Ageing (MIA Portugal).

MPU’s rector, Im Sio Kei, highlighted the goal of working together in health, with a particular focus on healthy longevity, noting that the University of Coimbra is very strong in this area while MPU is very strong in artificial intelligence
