Union for Development: “Creating more qualified jobs outside the Game”

The Development Union promises to empower the population through "a more proactive role in legislative oversight." The party, which is running for the Legislative Assembly, aims, above all, to improve the employment conditions of residents. It aims to implement a "phased reduction mechanism for imported employment" and create skilled jobs in non-gaming industries.

The Union for Development has participated in the elections for the Macau Legislative Assembly (LA) for over three decades. The mission remains the same, according to the press release sent to local newsrooms: “to ensure a greater public voice and play a more proactive role in legislative oversight.”

The LA, according to list number 5, is not only “the body responsible for approving, amending, suspending, and repealing laws, but also an important platform for reflecting public opinion and overseeing the Administration.”

The established priorities are local employment, social security, and youth development, stating that its candidates have “in-depth knowledge” of the challenges faced by ordinary citizens, as well as their fundamental role in social development.

Based on this, it proposes “a multifaceted approach” to employment, aiming in the short term to implement “a mechanism for the phased reduction of imported employment” by reviewing the number of foreign workers in local companies and using indicators to determine human resource needs, so that “there are more opportunities for local residents.”

In the long term, it argues that the ‘1+4’ diversification strategy “calls for greater support for non-gaming industries,” with the aim of “creating more qualified employment and broader career advancement channels for young people.” At the same time, it argues that the government “should carefully assess the need to introduce high-level foreign professionals, ensuring that the employment prospects of local university graduates are not compromised.”

In the statement, the list also advocates for improving labor rights, without specifying specific measures to this effect.

In the area of social security, the Union advocates a “people-oriented” philosophy, supporting the government in developing a comprehensive system that covers “all stages of life and all aspects of existence.” Some of the measures proposed in this regard include “improvements to the pension adjustment mechanism, public subsidies, family-friendly policies, and optimization of caregiver support resources.”

*Unlike the other candidates, this list did not accept PLATAFORMA’s Q&A interview request. Instead, it sent a press release, which serves as the basis for this news article.
