Greater Bay athletes unite in Macao for MSO Sands China Cup

Sands China Ltd. and the Macau Special Olympics (MSO) co-organised the inaugural MSO Sands China Cup on August 9, bringing together more than 200 athletes for a day of competition and solidarity. Sponsored by the Macao Sports Bureau and supported by the Badminton Federation of Macau, the tournament featured over 90 matches across singles, doubles, inclusive doubles, and wheelchair badminton.

The event highlighted not only athletic excellence but also the importance of community support. Sixty volunteers, including Sands Cares Ambassadors, joined scouts, students, and MSO Ambassadors to assist athletes throughout the day. At the closing ceremony, 25 awards were presented, with prizes and trophies sponsored by Sands China.

Beyond the court, Sands China hosted the Guangdong and Hong Kong teams with a stay at The Londoner Grand and a tour of the company’s integrated resorts. Athletes also received health evaluations through the MSO Healthy Athletes programme, covering fitness, mental health, and disease prevention.

Dr. Wilfred Wong, Executive Vice Chairman of Sands China, said the initiative marked another step in the company’s 11-year partnership with MSO, reinforcing a commitment to inclusion, sports, and public health. “The inclusive MSO Sands China Cup not only demonstrates the boundless nature of sports, but also provides a valuable cross-regional platform for skills exchange,” he said.

The tournament served as a prelude to the 12th National Games for Persons with Disabilities and the 9th National Special Olympic Games, to be held across Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao later this year.
