According to the MP, Gonçalo Oliveira was a law student and had turned 21 on Saturday. Stating that this is a “terribly sad and moving moment”, the PSD/Algarve president also described Gonçalo Oliveira on the social network Facebook as “a very lucid, committed young man, with a contagious civic commitment and inexhaustible generosity”.
“As president of the PSD Algarve, I decree institutional mourning and address my condolences to all Gonçalo’s family and friends, as well as all those who lost their lives,” he added.
A car crash today caused the death of the five occupants on National Road 266, in the municipality of Monchique, a source from the Algarve Sub-regional Command of Civil Protection told Lusa.
The victims were found charred, after the accident also caused a fire to spread in the surrounding woods, which was promptly contained, said the same source. The first alert was given at 12.46 p.m. and the fire in the surrounding woodland was contained by 1.10 p.m., according to the source.
The five victims were declared dead by a doctor from the National Institute for Medical Emergencies (INEM) who travelled to the scene. Also according to Civil Protection, 101 operatives from the fire brigade, the National Republican Guard (GNR), the Institute for Nature Conservation and Forests (ICNF) and INEM were involved in resolving the accident.
