Anitta’s visit to the Kuikuro village in the Xingu Indigenous Park (MT) sparked controversy on social media. On that occasion, the singer took part in the Quarup, a funeral ceremony honoring the dead, but was criticized by Indigenous activist Ysani Kalapalo, who called her presence a “disrespect” to the ritual.
In a video posted on her social media, the activist said the artist did not follow the expected tradition during the ritual dance. “She had to be fully painted and also naked, only wearing ornaments. The fact that she was clothed while dancing the Quarup already disrespects the ritual,” she said.
Ysani, with more than 120,000 followers on social media and 800,000 on YouTube, also accused Anitta of using the Indigenous cause for self-promotion. “We know very well that Anitta contributes practically nothing to the progress of Indigenous peoples. Her statements are just for show.”
Anitta responded to the criticism, stressing that her visit to Xingu took place at the invitation of Indigenous leaders and organizations linked to the cause.
