Hengqin Port sees nearly 40% surge in summer traffic, driven by family travelers

Hengqin Port recorded a new high in summer passenger traffic, with over 1 million crossings as of Tuesday, July 15th. This marks a significant 38% increase compared to the same period last year. Mainland Chinese travelers are the primary source, accounting for 62 percent of the total, or 630,000 crossings.

Citing data from the Macao Daily News, family trips, student groups, and study tours are the main drivers of this increased summer traffic. Weekend passenger flow has shown particularly strong growth. Since July 1st, the average daily weekend crossings at Hengqin Port have reached 88,000, a 34 percent increase from weekdays. Peak traffic periods are consistently observed from Friday to Sunday, reflecting robust demand for short-haul cross-border travel.

Facilitative customs policies continue to play a crucial role. There has been a notable rise in the use of “multiple-entry visas” and “Hengqin-Macau tour group” endorsements. Statistics show that during the summer, over 9,500 travelers used the “Hengqin-Macau tour” endorsement via Hengqin Port, while “multiple-entry visas” surpassed 30,000 uses. These policies have effectively boosted the popularity of “Hengqin + Macau” joint travel packages.
