The accelerated growth is attributed to the new “multi-entry visa” policy for mainland Chinese tourists, which has driven daily average arrivals to 106,000.
Mainland visitors accounted for 71.6 percent of total arrivals, followed by those from Hong Kong (19.1 percent), Taiwan (2.4 percent), and foreign markets (6.9 percent). The Gongbei Border Gate remained the most frequented entry point, handling 41 percent of arrivals, followed by the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge (24.1 percent) and the Hengqin checkpoint (13.5 percent).
With the summer holiday season underway, authorities anticipate further increases in visitor numbers and have strengthened border coordination with counterparts in mainland China and Hong Kong to ensure smooth entry.
Macau Government Tourism Office (MGTO) Director Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes noted that the current figures are in line with earlier projections of 38 to 39 million total visitors for 2025. “Today’s numbers are encouraging and we will reassess our forecasts while closely monitoring the summer travel trend,” she said, noting that weather conditions, including typhoons, could affect turnout.
The second phase review of the 2017 “Macau Tourism Industry Development Master Plan” is expected to be released later this year, providing updated forecasts and new action plans.
Authorities aim to diversify tourism offerings through new facilities and thematic travel routes, including initiatives from a recent youth travel competition whose winners have signed cooperation agreements with local agencies.
In the next phase, MGTO will promote Macau internationally through events and roadshows, including upcoming campaigns in Lisbon, Kuala Lumpur, and Jakarta. October will also see a major influencer event in Macau, following a similar mainland campaign held in June.
Macau is also exploring cooperation with airlines and regional partners to advance the “multi-destination itinerary” initiative, aimed at attracting more international visitors.
