Thai coup fears rattle gaming investment confidence

The political realignment and talk of a coup in Thailand are raising grave concerns about the Entertainment Complex Bill, which would legalise ten per cent of such properties for gaming in the announced four locations of Bangkok, Chon Buri, Chiang Mai and Phuket.

Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn was suspended on 1 July from her national primary role over ethics charges, but was sworn in on 3 July as Minister of Culture in a secondary role, with stiff opposition arising against her championed casino bill. The gaming bill was supposed to have been voted on in April and on 9 July but has been stymied by political chaos.

All of Macau’s gaming operators are watching this closely, as Galaxy, MGM China, Melco, Sands, SJM and Wynn have ground marketing intelligence active in Thailand.
