Thailand gaming bill hampered by looming political risk, border row with Cambodia

Thailand’s Entertainment Complex Bill is facing deepening political risks as Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra comes under investigation for ethics violations by the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) in the Constitutional Court as early as this Monday, with calls for her ouster as the bill’s planned 9 July reading is pushed back.

One source on the special committee for the Entertainment Complex bill told MNA: “We were told it’s going to be a few more weeks, maybe at the end of July or in August. But we really don’t know now because of the politics.”
James Kaplan, a board advisor to Bangkok Land Public Company Ltd, which owns the IMPACT Arena, Conference and Exhibition Centre in northern metropolitan Bangkok, comments, “Delaying parliamentary debate of the gaming bill is probably a good thing for two reasons:

“First, the government needs to prioritise solving the border issue with its neighbour, Cambodia, and secondly, the government should take this opportunity to sharpen its communication to the public to better describe the economic and employment benefits of entertainment complexes [and] spend less time finessing how Thai nationals will be allowed access to the complexes.”
