Guinea-Bissau: State may take steps if Israel-Iran war does not end – president

The President of Guinea-Bissau, Umaro Sissoco Embaló, on Monday urged Israel and Iran to end their armed conflict, warning that his country may “take measures” to end the war.

Sissoco Embaló made the warning in a speech during the inauguration of an 8.2 kilometre section of Guinea-Bissau’s first motorway, built with Chinese cooperation to link Bissau airport to the town of Safim.

Addressing the people who attended the ceremony, the Guinea-Bissau president said that the world “is complicated and violent” with wars in various areas and between countries.

“We will tell our brothers in Israel and Iran to stop the war immediately because otherwise Guinea-Bissau will be forced to take appropriate measures to stop the war,” said Umaro Sissoco Embalo.

The Guinea-Bissau president, who was trained in security in Israel, made a working visit to Tel Aviv in March 2024 at the invitation of Israeli head of state Isaac Herzog, whom he called on, among other things, to end hostilities against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

Embaló’s visit, the first by an African leader in that context, took place days after new attacks by the Israeli army against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

At the same time, Umaro Sissoco Embaló visited the West Bank and met in Ramallah with the leader of the Palestinian National Authority, Mahmoud Abbas, whom he also urged to end hostilities between the extremist group Hamas and Israel in the Gaza Strip.

Embaló was then awarded the “Grand Collar” of the Palestinian State and laid wreaths at the mausoleum of Yasser Arafat, the main leader of the Palestinian cause, who died in 2004.
