A California man accused of attempting to assassinate President Donald Trump during a high-profile media event made a silent appearance in federal court on Monday. Cole Tomas Allen, 31, formally entered a plea of not guilty to a series of charges stemming from a violent breach of the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner in late April.

Clad in orange jail attire and restrained by shackles, Allen allowed his legal counsel to speak for him as the court addressed the gravity of an attack that nearly claimed the life of a Secret Service agent.

The incident occurred at the Washington Hilton on April 25, when authorities say Allen charged through a security perimeter armed with an array of firearms and knives. During the chaotic encounter, the defendant allegedly discharged a shotgun at a Secret Service officer, striking the agent’s ballistic vest.

While the officer escaped serious injury due to the protective gear, the breach caused the immediate suspension and early conclusion of the prestigious annual gathering. Allen, a resident of Torrance, was injured during his apprehension but did not sustain any gunshot wounds.

A significant portion of the hearing centered on potential conflicts of interest within the prosecution. Allen’s defense team is currently pushing for U.S. District Judge Trevor McFadden to bar high-ranking Justice Department officials from overseeing the trial.

The request specifically names Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche and U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro, both of whom were in attendance as guests when the violence erupted. Defense attorney Eugene Ohm argued that because these officials were in the line of fire, they function more as witnesses or victims than impartial prosecutors, potentially necessitating the disqualification of the entire U.S. Attorney’s Office in Washington.

Federal prosecutors revealed that Allen had previously expressed to FBI investigators that he did not anticipate surviving the assault. This admission led to his initial placement on suicide watch, though his attorneys have filed complaints regarding his subsequent treatment in custody.

They allege that Allen was subjected to “unnecessary” conditions, including constant illumination in a padded cell and frequent strip searches. Despite these objections, the court is moving forward with a case that carries a potential life sentence for the attempted assassination charge alone. Allen remains in federal custody and is slated to return to court for further proceedings on June 29.
