Burned Area in Brazil Nearly Doubles by November Compared to 2023

Affected territory surpasses 297,000 km², equivalent to the state of Rio Grande do Sul

From January to November, fire affected an area of 297,680 km² in Brazil, equivalent to the state of Rio Grande do Sul (281,707 km²). This figure represents a 90% increase compared to the same period in 2023, when the burned area was 156,448 km².

The data comes from the Fire Monitor, part of the MapBiomas platform, and was released on Monday (16). The total recorded over the first 11 months of 2024 is the largest since 2019, when the tool’s historical series began.

The majority (57%) of the territory affected by fire in the first 11 months of 2024 is located in the Amazon. Of the 169,000 km² impacted in the region, 76,000 km² were forested areas, where fire does not occur naturally and the vegetation is highly sensitive to flames.

The second most affected biome from January to November was the Cerrado, with 96,000 km² burned — 85% of which occurred in areas of native vegetation.
