Amsterdam violence an ‘explosion’ of anti-Semitism

The violence that erupted overnight in Amsterdam represented an "explosion" of anti-Semitism that has "not been seen in a long time," the city's mayor Femke Halsema said on Friday.

She described “hit and run” attacks on supporters of Israeli team Maccabi Tel-Aviv with “hooligans on scooters” seeking out Israeli fans. “I am livid,” she said.

The mayor of Amsterdam announced tighter security measures in the city after a night of violence where fans of Israeli football club Maccabi Tel Aviv were targeted.

“I am ashamed” at what happened in the city, admitted Femke Halsema, as she described hit-and-run attacks on the Israeli fans, announcing a temporary ban on protests.
