“Inflation is a major challenge that will take time to resolve”

The president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, on Wednesday urged people to vote in the European elections, less than a year away, to decide "what kind of Europe" they want, guaranteeing that she has fulfilled 90 per cent of her promises.

“In just under 300 days, Europeans will go to the polls in our unique and remarkable democracy. As with any election, it will be a time for people to reflect on the state of our Union and the work done by those who represent them, but it will also be a time to decide what kind of future and what kind of Europe they want,” said Ursula von der Leyen, in her speech on the State of the Union in 2023, at the European Parliament plenary session in the French city of Strasbourg.

Speaking for the fourth time since she took office, the last time this term, the leader of the EU’s executive appealed to younger voters, who are voting for the first time, noting that among the voters in the European elections in June 2024 will be “the youngest, who were born in 2008, the year of the financial crisis”.

“When they’re in the polling booth, they’ll think about what’s important to them. They will think about the war raging on our borders or the impact of destructive climate change, about how artificial intelligence will influence their lives or about their chances of getting a house or a job in the next few years,” he said.
