The Israeli prime minister has already accepted the US president’s invitation, which comes at a time when the controversial judicial reform in Israel is being discussed and on the day he recognized Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara.
US President Joe Biden invited the Israeli Prime Minister to a meeting at the White House, Benjamin Netanyahu’s office indicated this Monday, adding that the invitation was accepted.
“President Biden has invited the Prime Minister to a meeting soon in the US. The prime minister accepted the invitation,” Netanyahu’s office said in a statement.
This invitation comes as the Government of Netanyahu continues to defend the disputed judicial reform project that has led to demonstrations in Israel and even raised criticism from the US administration.
During a telephone conversation between the two leaders, Netanyahu “brought the American president up to date on the law that should be adopted next week by parliament, and his intention (…) to obtain broad public support (…) for the remaining process ” legislative, indicated the prime minister’s office, which referred to a “long and warm” conversation.
Last week parliament approved at first reading a key reform measure aimed at nullifying the possibility for the judiciary to rule on “the logical character” of Government decisions.
Recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara
The announcement also comes on the day that Israel formally recognized Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara, through a letter sent by Netanyahu to King Mohammed VI, revealed the Alawite royal house.
In the missive, Netanyahu informs Mohammed VI of Israel’s decision to “recognise Morocco’s sovereignty over the territory of Western Sahara” according to the official communiqué released by the official news agency MAP.
Israel’s position coincides with that adopted in December 2020 by then US President Donald Trump, who also recognized Rabat’s sovereignty over the former Spanish colony, and which constituted the bargaining chip for the normalization of Morocco’s relations with Israel. .
