The surgery that Pope Francis underwent to repair an abdominal hernia was completed after three hours without complications, the Vatican announced.
“The intervention ended: it ran smoothly and lasted three hours,” the Vatican press service said in a brief statement.
Sources close to the Vatican had already, shortly before, mentioned that Jorge Bergoglio, 86 years old, had been transferred to his apartment on the 10th floor of the Gemelli Hospital, in Rome.
According to the same sources, quoted by the Italian news agency ANSA, the pope’s surgical intervention, under general anesthesia, was a laparotomy with plastic surgery of the abdominal wall performed laparoscopically to repair a hernia that formed over an old abdominal scar and which threatened to cause intestinal obstruction.
