Remco Evenepoel tested positive for covid-19 in a test carried out after his victory in the Cesena time trial and will have to leave the Tour of Italy, announced the team itself, Soudal-QuickStep.
The Belgian, who regained the pink jersey by being faster in the 35 km covered in the rain, will leave the lead to the British Geraint Thomas, as he will not return for Tuesday’s stage, after completing the rest day.
“I am really devastated to have to leave the race. As part of the team’s protocols, I had to do a routine test, which unfortunately came back positive”, said Evenepoel himself in a statement issued by the Belgian team.
