Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky today called for the creation of a special court to try Russian aggression against his country, following a visit to the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague.
“There must be accountability” for crimes of aggression, which are the “beginning of evil”, Zelensky declared in a speech to diplomats and other officials, referring to Russia’s invasion of his country in February 2022.
The Ukrainian President also called for “wide-scale justice” and not “hybrid impunity”.
“This can only be applied by the court”, he argued, despite the fact that the ICC does not have the competence to judge Russia for crimes of aggression, since the country is not a signatory to the Rome Statute.
