“In the last week more than 10 young Ukrainian athletes were killed in Bakhmut.” The sentence, uttered on February 7th of this year, belongs to Olha Saladukha, Ukrainian athlete, European triple jump champion.
A year after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, 10 may seem like just a number. But, it reflects with tremendous violence that a war does not choose victims and everyone can be victims.
The fact is that the total numbers are more overwhelming. After a year of conflict, according to the Ukrainian authorities, the Russian attacks caused the death of 231 athletes and coaches. And they were also the cause of the destruction of 343 sports facilities on Ukrainian soil.
