Portugal: Rail strike forces cancellation of 20% of trains on 7th day of action

Portugal’s state-owned rail operator, CP, on Tuesday by 6 p.m. had cancelled 196 services out of a total of 980 scheduled, due to the strikes that began on 8 February and which are planned to continue until 21 February.

According to figures released by the company, 784 services ran between midnight and 6 p.m., with around 20% cancelled.

Among long-distance trains, 12 were cancelled out of a total of 58 scheduled during the period, while 75 regional services were cancelled, out of 255 scheduled.

In Lisbon suburban trains, 79 out of 468 scheduled were cancelled; in Porto, 30 out of 199 scheduled trains did not run.

On its website, CP has the following warning for passengers about disruptions to service: “Because of strikes called by the National Union of Train Drivers of Portuguese Railways (SMAQ), the National Union of Railway Sector Workers (SNTSF) and the Itinerant Commercial Revision Railway Union (SFRCI), there will be serious disturbances in the circulation of trains, at national level, in the period between 00:00 on 08 February 2023 and 24:00 on 21 February 2023.”
