Paulo Cunha Alves is leaving the Consulate General of Portugal in Macau and Hong Kong, in what was a term full of limitations due to the pandemic. From the new consul, Alexandre Leitão, representatives of the Portuguese and Macanese communities expect increased attention to the progressive reduction in the number of Portuguese residing in the territory.
The Portuguese community is once again going through a transition phase with differentiating aspects compared to the 1999 scenario, when Macau was transferred to China. In this sense, representatives of the Portuguese and Macanese communities consider that the new consul general of Portugal in Macau and Hong Kong, Alexandre Leitão, will have to be attentive to the new configuration of the community.
“Given the progressive decline of the Portuguese community, it is a very delicate time [to assume functions]”, said Miguel de Senna Fernandes, president of the Associação dos Macaenses (ADM).
