Iran has completely closed the Strait of Hormuz once again, shutting down a highly strategic maritime chokepoint for global oil and gas transportation in direct retaliation for recent United States military strikes, the Iranian maritime authority announced today.

“Due to the heightened tensions provoked by the aggression of American forces in the region, the Strait of Hormuz is closed until further notice,” stated the Persian Gulf Strait Authority, the governing body managing the waterway, in an official release.

Iran has maintained control over the strategic strait since the outbreak of the regional conflict, which was triggered by American and Israeli airstrikes against the Tehran regime on February 28. Until today’s total shutdown, the Iranian military had allowed a restricted daily transit of approximately 20 commercial vessels through the passage.
