“Family budgets around the world are being stretched to the limit, which means the poorest will go hungry or freeze this winter unless immediate steps are taken to increase their incomes,” said De Schutter, Special Rapporteur. on poverty and human rights, in a statement.
The rapporteur, who will speak today at the Council of Europe in Strasbourg (France), stressed that the rise in prices of basic products, along with the crisis already caused by the covid-19 pandemic, could leave between 75 million and 95 million people in poverty this year.
Olivier De Schutter also highlighted the urgency of improving the thermal insulation of homes in the face of the upcoming winter in the northern hemisphere, where there could be a great shortage of gas as an indirect consequence of the war in Ukraine.
